For some designers, luxury begins with aesthetics. For Gaetano La Vigna, it begins with memory.

Long before founding GLV Design and becoming recognized for creating refined interiors across Europe, the Middle East and the United States, Gaetano’s understanding of craftsmanship was shaped inside his family home in the south of Italy. At just eight years old, he learned carving and wood inlay techiques from his grandfather, a cabinetmaker whose dedication to artisanal precision left a lasting impression. From his father, he inherited a fascination with forged iron and metalwork, developing an early appreciation for the balance between raw materials and artistic expression.

Today, those early influences remain visible in his work — spaces layered with texture, sculptural detail and timeless sophistication, where contemporary luxury is softened by craftsmanship and cultural depth.

“My approach has always been emotional before it is visual,” says Gaetano. “A space should not simply look luxurious. It should create a feeling, an atmosphere that people remember.”

After studying at the Art High School’s Architecture of Furniture department, Gaetano continued his education at a private design university in Rome while simultaneously working in advertising, film production and television design. The experience exposed him to the power of storytelling through environments, an idea that continues to inform his interiors today.

Following graduation, Gaetano relocated to the United States, where he worked in architecture and interior design within one of the country’s leading engineering firms before returning to Italy to focus on high-end hospitality, retail and residential projects throughout Tuscany.

His international career would later take him to London, where he worked on prestigious commercial interiors ranging from luxury automotive showrooms to renowned retail concepts and hospitality spaces. Yet it was the Middle East that ultimately became one of the defining chapters of his career.

Since moving to the Gulf region more than a decade ago, Gaetano has contributed to major hospitality, residential and mixed-use developments across Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and beyond, working on projects spanning Riyadh, Jeddah, Cairo, Turin, Milan, Florence and Naples.

The region’s evolving relationship with luxury, he explains, continues to inspire him.

“There is a growing appreciation for spaces that feel deeply personal,” he says. “Clients today are looking for meaning, authenticity and individuality. Luxury is no longer simply about scale or ornamentation; it is about experience.”

This philosophy sits at the heart of GLV Design, the studio Gaetano founded in 2003. Known for combining Italian artistic sensibility with contemporary international living, the firm has developed a reputation for interiors that balance elegance with functionality. Rich materials, architectural layering and subtle cultural references define many of the studio’s projects, whether in private residences, boutique hospitality or executive spaces.

The studio’s design process begins not with sketches, but with conversation.

At GLV Design, every project follows a three-step philosophy: listening, interpreting and executing. Understanding the client’s aspirations and emotional connection to the space is considered just as important as the physical design itself.

“Design is deeply personal,” Gaetano explains. “You are shaping the environment where people live, gather, think and create memories. It requires trust.”

While rooted in traditional craftsmanship, GLV Design has also embraced new technologies, including AI-assisted design workflows that help visualize concepts and refine details with greater precision. For Gaetano, however, technology should enhance creativity and not replace it.

“The human element remains irreplaceable,” he says. “Technology allows us to improve efficiency and communication, but true design still comes from sensitivity, culture and intuition.”

That balance between innovation and heritage has helped position GLV Design within the contemporary luxury landscape, particularly among clients seeking interiors that feel both international and deeply curated.

In 2023, Gaetano La Vigna’s work received further international recognition when he was awarded Luxury Lifestyle Awards’ Best Luxury Interior Designer in Kuwait and named among the Top 100 Designers Worldwide.

Yet despite decades of experience and global recognition, Gaetano continues to approach design with the same curiosity that first inspired him as a child working beside his grandfather.

“Luxury should never feel cold,” he reflects. “The most beautiful spaces are the ones that tell a story.”
