Delays at fashion shows are like, well, being British and liking tea, it just goes. That being said, there are delays and then there delays. Marc Jacobs had always been notorious for always running late but following the two-hour late show in 2007, the camel’s back was broken. Since then, he’s would be the shows that you could set your watch to. But the 80’s inspired theme of the Marc Jacobs Spring Summer 2019 collection would not be the only throwback.
We all gathered, quite promptly I might add, in the Park Avenue Armory for the show to start at 6 p.m. After about half an hour of waiting the talk was the collection hadn’t even arrived yet! When the wait had turned into an hour some guests left as Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty lingerie show was about to start in Dumbo. Some of us had greater concerns as a lot of us had travelling plans later that night to fly to the UK for London Fashion Week.
Then, finally, the first model hit the runway at around an hour and a half after the show was meant to take place and boy did the show ruffle more than just features. It was more ruffles than an 80’s prom! As mentioned in some of the other articles the ‘retro’ inspiration has been hitting most Spring Summer 2019 collections viciously. From the De Stijl influences in Zang Toi’s collection to the 70’s influences… well, pretty much everywhere the Marc Jacobs Spring Summer 2019 was 80’s heaven. With pastel colours from peach to the major trend that is purple, the collection sees 80’s elements such as strong shoulders, exaggerated accents and single tone looks hit the runway. So add Thriller, remove one earing and get out the blue mascara… its time to celebrate the 80’s once again.
