The Bugatti Tourbillon: A Timeless Automotive Marvel

In 2004, the revived Bugatti brand revolutionised the automotive world with the launch of the Veyron, a hyper sports car boasting 1,001 hp.

This unprecedented achievement was succeeded in 2016 by the Chiron, the world’s first car with 1,500 hp. Both vehicles featured the advanced 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16 engine.

Now, Bugatti redefines automotive excellence with the introduction of the Bugatti Tourbillon, marking a new era with an innovative powertrain and platform.

The Essence and Philosophy

Mate Rimac, CEO of Bugatti, stated, “The development of the Bugatti Tourbillon was guided by 115 years of Bugatti history and Ettore Bugatti’s mantras: ‘if comparable, it is no longer Bugatti’ and ‘nothing is too beautiful.’ These principles shaped the design and engineering teams’ efforts to create the next chapter in the Bugatti story.”

Icons like the Type 57SC Atlantic, Type 35, and Type 41 Royale served as inspirations, embodying beauty, performance, and luxury. The Tourbillon, named after a Swiss watchmaking invention from 1801, reflects Bugatti’s French heritage. The tourbillon, known for its complexity and timelessness, symbolises the car’s mechanical elegance and perpetual appeal.

Design and Aerodynamics

The Bugatti Tourbillon is a testament to the principle of being ‘shaped by speed.’ Every surface, inlet, and ridge is meticulously crafted for aerodynamic efficiency and thermodynamic benefits. The design draws inspiration from historical Bugatti elements: the horseshoe grille, the Bugatti Line, the central ridge, and the dual-colour split.

Frank Heyl, Bugatti’s Director of Design, noted, “The creations of Ettore and Jean Bugatti are ingenious in their aerodynamics and enduring beauty. We drew inspiration from the Type 35 and the Type 57SC Atlantic, curating volumes that support the car’s extreme proportions and create a sense of speed even at a standstill.”

The Tourbillon features innovative aerodynamic solutions, including a rear wing that remains submerged during top-speed runs and acts as an airbrake. The new diffuser concept, integrated within the structure, ensures perfect balance and hides the crash structure, enhancing the open rear-end design.

Interior: A Timeless Analogue Experience

In a world where digital screens quickly become outdated, the Tourbillon’s interior focuses on timeless design. Inspired by horology, the cabin offers an authentic analogue experience. The centrepiece is an instrument cluster designed by Swiss watchmakers, comprising over 600 parts and constructed from titanium and gemstones.

The centre console blends crystal glass and aluminium, revealing the intricate workings of switches and the engine start lever. Hidden until needed, a high-definition digital screen displays vehicle data and offers seamless mobile connectivity.

Powertrain and Performance

The Bugatti W16 engine set a new benchmark for combustion technology. The Tourbillon continues this legacy with an 8.3-litre naturally aspirated V16 engine, developed with Cosworth, paired with a front e-Axle and two electric motors. Producing a total of 1,800 hp, the powertrain combines combustion engine power with electric motor torque.

The 25 kWh oil-cooled 800V battery powers the electric motors, providing an all-electric range of over 60 km. The hybrid powertrain ensures extraordinary performance and significantly reduces emissions compared to its predecessors.

Advanced Engineering

The Tourbillon features a next-generation T800 carbon composite chassis, integrating the battery as a structural part and incorporating advanced materials. The new chassis includes multi-link suspension, 3D-printed structural braces, and a hollow airfoil arm developed using AI, enhancing vehicle dynamics and reducing weight.

The advanced braking system employs carboceramic technology and a bespoke brake-by-wire system. The Michelin Pilot Cup Sport 2 tyres are specifically developed for the Tourbillon, ensuring optimal performance.

A Vision for Eternity

Mate Rimac emphasised, “We looked back at Bugatti’s history and saw Ettore and Jean’s refusal to compromise. The Tourbillon embodies this spirit, integrating cutting-edge technology and timeless design. It’s a car designed for eternity, echoing Bugatti’s legacy of creating incomparable and beautiful machines.”

The Bugatti Tourbillon is now in its testing phase, with customer deliveries expected in 2026. Limited to 250 examples, this vehicle represents the pinnacle of Bugatti’s engineering and design prowess, poised to become an enduring icon in automotive history.
